Our Place in the Great Chain of Being

In the wisdom teachings, our planet Earth is seen as a unique expression of "the One Life."  It is viewed as a single, conscious, living organism in which we live, move, and have our being—we, the human kingdom, and all other kingdoms of life on Earth.  Among the many names given to the consciousness of this being are:  the Lord of our World, the Planetary Logos, the Divine Thinker, the One Consciousness, and God.

These names indicate the reality that our planetary life is governed by a higher spiritual Being.  For many contemporary spiritual seekers, still discarding outworn notions of God and Heaven, this reality has unsettling implications.  The result is a paradoxical gap in understanding.  There is growing awareness that life on Earth is evolving toward greater wholeness and synthesis, yet little acknowledgment that higher forces are directing this evolutionary process.  However, to fulfill our role in the new era, as outlined in the Ageless Wisdom, we have to understand the Chain of Being on our planet.  Our destiny is to become a conscious link in this chain that is both visible and invisible.

The fact that human consciousness is evolving collectively has become evident to the countless individuals around the globe who are awakening.  Many have also come to realize that other visible dimensions of life, kingdoms of nature, are also developing greater awareness.  What is little known (outside of esoteric circles) is that human consciousness is evolving in a particular way, for a particular purpose, under the guidance of members of an invisible kingdom of nature, the kingdom of souls.  These spiritual beings are themselves inspired and given direction by the Planetary Logos—the creative Intelligence of our Earth.

Everything that is now occurring in our world, both creative and destructive, is related to the working out of the evolutionary plans and purposes of our planetary Logos.  We are told that this great Being is now undergoing a dramatic expansion of consciousness as it moves, along with the entire solar system, into a higher vibratory field of the cosmos.  Every cell of life on our small planet Earth is being affected by subtle, cosmic, evolutionary forces.

The most visible result of this process is the destruction of form on the material plane, but the cause is the expansion of consciousness.  Both consciousness and form are subject to the laws of evolution, the wisdom teachings tell us.  If a "unit of consciousness" expands and the physical form containing it cannot adapt to the awareness growing inside of it, the form will break apart.  This is true of every material form, whether a human being, a civilization, or a planet.

As new cosmic energies penetrate the Earth, we're seeing breakdowns and disruptions at every level, along with breakthroughs to higher awareness.  We're now witnessing a universal principle in action:  As consciousness evolves, old forms are destroyed to make way for the creation of new ones.  The current wave of destruction is serving to free human consciousness from outgrown patterns of living and outworn thought-forms about our reason for being alive.  Individuals sensitive to the tide of evolution are becoming increasingly aware of the oneness and interrelatedness of all life—the essential idea of the future Aquarian civilization.  By contrast, the civilization now breaking apart grew out of the limited perception of separation.

From the start of human evolution until the middle of the last century, when the new influx of cosmic energies began to impact our planet, nearly all human beings viewed reality through the lens of the concrete mind—our instrument for navigating the concrete world of form.  Often called "the lower mind," it focuses on the outer form of things.  To the concrete mind we appear to be separate from one another, and from all that exists—from people of other races, religions, genders and nations; from other species and from the entire web of life on Earth.

In recent decades, a higher aspect of human awareness has been coming alive.  The current awakening is giving rise to an expanded perception of reality that arises from a higher aspect of mind.  Through the “higher mind,” many of us are becoming aware that the outer appearance of separate forms in the material world conceals an ocean of subtle energies—a vast and seamless energy matrix connecting all living beings.  This higher aspect of mind is our instrument for engaging with the inner worlds of abstract ideas and subtle energies, just as the concrete mind (along with our physical senses) is the personality's instrument for engaging with the world of form.

The higher mind holds the untapped potential of humanity that has been lying dormant, with rare exceptions, until this turning-point in evolution.  It is the tool that enables the soul to penetrate the higher worlds of spirit—the means by which human beings can become conscious links in the Great Chain of Being.  Preparation comes through experience of the subtle worlds—mystical encounters, synchronicities, and similar “events”—that cause one to register the reality of subtle realms.  It is from those inner realms that illumined guides and teachers work to impress the higher minds of advanced human beings with ideas that fuel the tide of evolution in every sphere of life.

As the Aquarian Age unfolds, the teachings tell us, cooperation between the human and spiritual kingdoms through the commingling of thought will become more commonplace.  By developing the higher capacities of mind and intuition we are destined to become "conscious mediators" between the higher kingdoms of spirit and the lower kingdoms (animal, plant, and mineral) of life on Earth.  During the next two thousand-plus years, it is expected that human consciousness will expand to the point where many will register elements of the divine plan and work in conscious cooperation with the Guides of the Race to realize the evolutionary purposes of the Planetary Logos.

This vision of the future may not be as far-fetched as it may initially seem.  The teachings reveal that the "building blocks" of the evolutionary plan are divine ideas.  The course of human history has been altered at critical junctures by ideas registered initially by intuitive individuals, then conveyed to growing bodies of people.  It is ideas—such as freedom, human rights, and serving the greater good—that have fostered expansions of human awareness and changed the direction of history.

The divine idea now being registered by the higher minds of awakening souls is the oneness of all life.  Since the start of the new millennium this idea has rapidly taken hold of human consciousness.  In light of the fact that the ability to register ideas "held in the Mind of God" is evidence that the higher mind is quickening, and the fact that the undeveloped higher mind of humanity has been the "missing link" in the conscious chain of planetary life, it is safe to say that we are now witnessing the start of a radically new phase of evolution.  The first dim outlines of the unfolding divine plan for the Aquarian Age are coming into view.

It has been said that humanity is destined to fulfill a great spiritual purpose in the coming age as active participants in the Great Chain of Being.  Carrying out this purpose will require that human souls awaken to their true nature, gain control of the outer persona, and learn to utilize the faculties of higher mind to build a subtle bridge to the spiritual kingdoms of our planet.  That bridge will enable human minds to be impressed with the divine ideas formulated by citizens of the inner kingdoms.  It is predicted that acting under their guidance, humanity will over time establish a new global culture and civilization.

We stand at an extraordinary turning-point.  Despite the chaos of these times— undoubtedly because of the destruction of old forms—there is a growing awakening to the unchanging reality of the soul and to the awareness that all of life is one.  Many individuals and groups around the world are already giving form to this new divine idea.  As the soul moves into the foreground of human awareness and our higher potential is actualized, we will increasingly be impressed with the ideas of the Divine Thinker.  And as evolution proceeds, we will come to know how the human being is "made in the image of God," and how each of us can become a conscious link in the Great Chain of Being.
